BILOXI, MS (July 21, 2009)—Employees of The Peoples Bank recently presented $17,540 of self-generated funds to representatives of Ocean Springs-Long Beach Interfaith Hospitality Network and Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence in ceremonies at the bank’s Main Office in Biloxi.
“Even during the worst financial crisis in our lifetimes, our Peoples Bank team pulled together to help their less fortunate Gulf Coast residents,” said Chevis C. Swetman, chairman and CEO of the bank. “I have never been so proud of our employees as I am today for their dedication in the face of so much adversity,” he added.
Employees of The Peoples Bank generated the donations through their own efforts. They created a series of events such as a bank golf tournament, bowling tournament, branch and department raffles that raised a total of $17,540. The funds were divided equally and presented to the two organizations, which had been selected by the employees late last year as the recipients of the annual donation program.
In addition, The Peoples Bank made a corporate donation last year of $5,000 each to the two organizations, so that Ocean Springs-Long Beach Interfaith Hospitality Network and Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence each received a total of $13,770.
The mission of the Ocean Springs-Long Beach Interfaith Hospitality Network is to mobilize communities to help low-income families achieve and sustain independence. The local organization serves as a catalyst for community initiatives such as transitional housing, parenting classes, and job training programs. Director Debbie Melton accepted the check on behalf of the organization.
The Gulf Coast Women's Center for Nonviolence was founded in 1977, first as a crisis line and later as a safe house to provide for the safety of the victims of domestic violence. During the past 30 years, the Center has developed into a comprehensive array of services for adult and child victims of violence, including domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and family members of homicide victims. Director Sandra Morrison the donation on behalf of the Center.
